But in the mid-19th century, the Comanche's way of life was threatened by the relentless advance of white settlers. As the buffalo herds dwindled and their traditional hunting grounds were encroached upon, the Comanche were forced to fight for their survival.

One man who witnessed the Comanche's struggle firsthand was W. Michael Farmer. A young surveyor from Texas, Farmer was captured by the Comanche in 1858.
